General practice: a place to start, a relationship to build

Why a familiar GP can help connect today's concerns with the bigger picture of your health.

You do not need a neatly labelled problem to make a GP appointment. Sometimes you have a specific question; sometimes you want to talk through a change you cannot quite explain. General practice offers a starting point for that conversation, and a place to return as your needs change.

Start with what matters to you

A consultation is a conversation between you and your doctor. The reason you booked matters, but so do the practical things around it: your work, caring responsibilities, previous care and what you hope to understand before you leave. Bringing these into the discussion helps the doctor see more than an isolated concern.

You can bring written questions, explain what has changed and say if something is difficult to discuss. If there are several topics, tell the clinic when booking so it can help you choose an appointment length.

Build a shared picture over time

Seeing a familiar GP can reduce the amount of history you need to repeat. Previous consultations, relevant reports and your own observations give future discussions context. Continuity does not guarantee a particular outcome; it creates an opportunity for your doctor to understand how your health fits into your life.

Connect the next steps

A GP consultation may lead to further discussion, an examination, investigations or a referral, depending on the doctor's assessment. Ask what each proposed next step is for, how you will receive results and who to contact with questions. A referral is not a confirmed specialist appointment, and arrangements can vary between providers.

Prepare for your appointment

Bring your current medication list, relevant reports and any questions you want to prioritise. Check the practitioner's profile, fees and appointment options with your selected clinic. Before leaving, clarify whether a follow-up is needed and how to arrange it. You do not have to resolve every question in one visit.

Continuity begins with being able to pick up the conversation where you left it.

Where to begin

Bring your current medication list and any relevant reports. If you have several things to discuss, ask the clinic which appointment length to book.
